1000 killed in Sudan landslide says rebel group

At least 1,000 persons were killed after a landslide flattened a mountain village in Sudan’s western Darfur region, AFP quoted a rebel group that controls the area as saying on Monday.

One person survived, the armed group said.

The incident in the Tarasin village took place on Sunday after several days of heavy rainfall in the region, Sudan Liberation Movement/Army was quoted as saying. The village is located in the Marra mountains.

The rebel group appealed to the United Nations and humanitarian aid organisations for assistance in recovering the bodies that are buried under the debris.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been locked in a civil war between the country’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis.

Darfur’s Governor Minni Minnawi said that the landslide was a “humanitarian tragedy that goes beyond the borders of the region”, AFP reported. He also urged global humanitarian organisations to urgently intervene.
