Come September, come a plethora of films and shows. The releases include Anurag Kashyap’s new movie Nishaanchi, the Telugu fantasy adventure Mirai, the second season of The Trial and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Leonardo Di Caprio-led satire.

Humans in the Loop

Aranya Sahay’s directorial debut looks at an Adivasi woman who tries to humanise artificial intelligence while working in a data centre in Jharkhand. The film stars Sonal Madhushankar in the lead role along with Geeta Guha, Vikas Gupta and Anurag Lugun.

Baaghi 4

September 5, Hindi, in cinemas

A Harsha directs Tiger Shroff’s return to his best-known role as an ace fighter. Baaghi 4 promises far more violence than the previous films. The cast includes Sonam Bajwa, Sanjay Dutt and Harnaaz Sandhu.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

The latest chapter in the Conjuring series, directed by Michael Chaves, stars franchise veterans Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson alongside Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy. The paranormal investigators played by Farmiga and Wilson visit a house that has supposedly been possessed by a demon.

Madharaasi

September 5, Tamil, in cinemas

Siva Karthikeyan headlines AR Murugadoss’s new Tamil movie, which has also been dubbed into other languages. The cast includes Vidyut Jammwal, Rukmini Vasanth and Biju Menon in key roles.

The film has been described as a romance with action, centred around a North Indian gang operating in Chennai. The music is by Anirudh Ravichander. The Hindi title is Dil Madharaasi.

Ghaati

September 5, Telugu, in cinemas

Krish Jagarlamudi’s movie stars Anushka Shetty as an Adivasi bus conductor who gets embroiled in a drug trafficking ring. The rural Andhra Pradesh-set film also stars Vikram Prabhu, Jagapathi Babu, Ravindra Vijay and Chaitanya Rao.

Bad Girl

September 5, Tamil, in cinemas

Anjali Sivaraman plays a young woman looking for love while swatting away a host of obstacles. Varsha Bharath’s directorial debut, produced by Vetri Maaran and Anurag Kashyap, was premiered at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam in February. The cast includes Shantipriya and Hridhu Haroon.

Inspector Zende

September 5, Hindi, on Netflix

The exploits of Mumbai police officer Madhukar Zende inspired Akshay Shah’s engaging documentary Zende in 2023. Zende has also written his memoir, Mumbai’s Most Wanted: The Thrilling Case Files of a Supercop. The Netflix film Inspector Zende explores the larger-than-life cop’s pursuit of the half-Indian and half-Vietnamese murderer Charles Sobhraj, renamed as Carl Bhojraj presumably to avoid a lawsuit.

Chinmay D Mandlekar’s Hindi movie stars Manoj Bajpayee as Zende and Jim Sarbh as Bhojraj alongside Bhalchandra Kadam, Sachin Khedekar, Girija Oak and Harish Dudhade.

Ufff Yeh Siyapaa

In this dialogue-free comedy, a man whose wife leaves him on suspicion of infidelity gets involved with a misdirected parcel containing drugs and murder. G Ashok’s film stars Sohum Shah, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Nora Fatehi and Omkar Kapoor.

Vivek Agnihotri’s latest propagandist film is about attacks on Hindus during communal riots in Kolkata in 1946. The film stars Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Saswata Chatterjee, Darshan Kumaar, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Puneet Issar and Rajesh Khera.

Spike Lee’s first film in five years is loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, itself based on Ed McBain’s crime novel King’s Ransom. Denzel Washington plays a music company magnate who is forced to cough up ransom for a child that isn’t his. The movie stars rapper ASAP Rocky along with Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Dean Winters, Ice Spice and John Douglas Thompson.

Kammattam

September 5, Malayalam, on ZEE5

Shan Thulasidharan’s Malayalam series stars Sudev Nair as a Kerala police officer investigating a suspicious death that leads to a financial fraud. The six-episode show is based on the real-life Thrissur co-operative bank scam. The cast includes Jins, Jeo Baby, Ajay Vaasudev, Akhil Kavalayoor, Arun Sol, Sreerekha and Jordy Poonjaa.

The Celluloid Closet

September 5, English, on MUBI

American filmmaker Rob Epstein’s acclaimed documentary examines the shifting portrayal of LGBTQ characters in Hollywood, from stereotypes to positive representations. Based on Vito Russo’s book of the same name, the film features interviews with Tom Hanks, Tony Curtis, Whoopi Goldberg, Quentin Crisp, Gore Vidal, Susan Sarandon, Shirley MacLaine and others.

Mark Ruffalo plays a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who heads a task force that is trying to arrest the leader (Tom Pelphrey) of a gang of robbers. The limited series, created by Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown, Run All Night, The Way Back), also stars Emilia Jones, Raul Castillo, Owen Teague, Thuso Mbedu and Fabien Frankel.

Aka Charlie Sheen

This documentary spills on the beans on Charlie Sheen’s fall from highest paid American television actor of all time for Two and a Half Men to tabloid joke. Andrew Renzi’s two-part documentary has extensive interviews with Sheen, in which the actor discusses his formative years, addictive behaviour and comeback.

Mussolini: Son of the Century

September 10, Italian, on MUBI

Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright’s series is based on Antonio Scurati’s bestselling novel about the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. The eight-part series, written by Stefano Bises and Davide Serino, explores Mussolini’s rise to power and then autocratic rule.

Luca Marinelli, the actor from The Old Guard, plays Mussolini. MUBI will release two episodes on September 10 and then episodes every week until October 22.

The Girlfriend

Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke star in a six-episode series adaptation of Michelle Frances’s novel of the same name. In The Girlfriend, Laura (Wright) finds her perfect life unravelling when her son Daniel brings home his girlfriend Cherry (Cooke). Laura suspects Cherry of hiding something. Or is Laura being overly possessive? Also starring Laurie Davidson and Waleed Zuaiter.

Dashavatar

Subodh Khanolkar directs the acting titan Dilip Prabhavalkar in a murder mystery set in the Konkan during a Dashavatar performance. The cast includes Mahesh Manjrekar, Vijay Kenkre, Sunil Tawde, Bharat Jadhav, Priyadarshini Indalkar, Siddharth Menon, Abhinay Berde and Ravi Kale.

Mirai

The hit film Hanu-Man’s lead actor Teja Sajja stars as the descendant of a mythic warrior who comes to the rescue of humankind. Karthik Gattamneni’s fantasy adventure, which has been dubbed into Hindi and other languages, also stars Shriya Saran, Jagapathi Babu, Jayaram, Tanja Keller and Ritika Nayak.

Jugnuma

Raam Reddy’s magic realist film The Fable has been retitled as Jugnuma. The English-Hindi film stars Manoj Bajpayee as a fruit orchard owner whose estate is afflicted by mysterious fires.

The cast includes Deepak Dobriyal, Priyanka Bose, Tillotama Shome, Hiral Sidhu and Awan Pookot. Raam Reddy has previously directed the Kannada comedy Thithi (2015).

Bin Lagnachi Goshta

Aditya Ingale’s comedy stars real-life couple Priya Bapat and Umesh Kamat as live-in lovers who decide to start a family. The film also stars Sukanya Kulkarni, Sanjay Mone, Nivedita Saraf and Girish Oak.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

The third and final Downton Abbey film – adapted from the popular television show – sees the Crawley clan enter the 1930s. The family members grapple with the scandal caused by a divorce and the disgrace resulting from near bankruptcy.

Tamannaah Bhatia and Diana Penty play besties who set up a craft beer business, running into external obstacles and internal doubts along the way. Directed by Archit Kumar and Collin D’Cunha, the Hindi series is written by Nandini Gupta, Aarsh Vora and Mithun Gangopadhyay, who also serves as creator alongside Nishant Nayak.

Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan has created along with Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan and directed The Ba***ds of Bollywood (pronounced as “bads”). The series is set in the world of Bollywood that Aryan Khan has seen up and close. Among its themes are the insider-outsider debate and behind-the-scenes scandals.

The cast includes Bobby Deol, Lakshya, Sahher Bambba, Manoj Pahwa, Mona Singh, Manish Chaudhari, Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, Vijayant Kohli, and Gautami Kapoor.

A New York restauranteur invites trouble when he lets his brother back into his life. Bateman has directed the first two episodes.
