The Indian rupee fell to an all-time low of 88.3 against the United States dollar on Friday amid concerns about Washington’s 50% tariff rate on goods imported from the country. The rupee fell by 0.65% to end at 88.19, marking its biggest one-day loss in nearly three months.

The currency had hit its previous lowest level of 87.95 in February. The rupee is Asia’s worst-performing currency this year.

According to a foreign exchange strategist, the tariffs, which came into effect on Wednesday, “are likely to prolong India’s balance of payment stress, keep financial flows weak, and widen the trade deficit”. Read more.


Activist Manoj Jarange-Patil has launched another indefinite hunger strike in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan to reiterate his demand for reservations in government jobs and education for the Maratha community under the Other Backward Classes category. This is the ninth protest held by Jarange-Patil in the past two years.

On Friday, he accused the Maharashtra government of “non-cooperation” on the matter and vowed not to back down until the demand was met this time.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told mediapersons that the government stands firmly behind the Maratha community and is seeking to find a constitutionally valid solution. Read on.


The Indian economy grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of the financial year 2025-’26, government data has shown. This marked the highest growth rate in five quarters.

The gross domestic product, or GDP, growth rate for the same three-month period last year was 6.5%.

The growth rate in the first quarter of this financial year is above the Reserve Bank of India’s projected GDP growth of 6.5% for the first quarter. On August 6, the central bank estimated GDP growth projection for the entire financial year 2025-’26 also at 6.5%. Read more.


Several families were trapped under debris after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts on Friday. Incessant rainfall has also disrupted movement in other parts of the state.

In a social media post, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that reports of cloudburst were received from the Bareth Dungar Tok area in Rudraprayag’s Buskedar tehsil and the Deval area of Chamoli district.

A man has been arrested for allegedly shouting abusive slogans about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an Opposition rally in Bihar’s Darbhanga. The incident took place on Wednesday during the INDIA bloc’s Voter Adhikar Yatra, which aims to highlight alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.

Videos of the incident have since been widely shared on social media, drawing sharp criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and its National Democratic Alliance partners.
