US 50 tariffs to begin tomorrow ED searches AAP MLA

The United States has stated in a draft notification that it will impose a 50% tariff on goods imported from India starting Wednesday. The tariff hikes could hurt close to 55% of India’s merchandise exports to the US worth $87 billion.

Diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Washington have escalated after the Donald Trump administration announced on August 6 that it would double the tariffs on goods imported from India to 50% for purchasing Russian oil amid the Ukraine war. A 25% so-called reciprocal tariff is already in effect.

Trump has repeatedly alleged that India’s imports were providing the funds that fuel Russia’s war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that his government would not succumb to Washington’s pressure. Read on.


The Enforcement Directorate searched former Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj’s residence in connection with a money-laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the construction of 24 hospitals sanctioned by the Aam Aadmi Party government. Bharadwaj represents the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency in New Delhi.

The case stems from a complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Vijender Gupta in August 2024. Gupta had alleged that Bharadwaj and Jain were involved in systematically manipulating project budgets, misusing public funds and colluding with private contractors.

In June, the Anti-Corruption Branch had registered a case against Bharadwaj and former health minister Satyendar Jain regarding irregularities in 2018-’19 in the sanctioning and construction of 24 hospitals worth approximately Rs 5,590 crore. Read on.


Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Odisha received heavy rainfall on Tuesday and experienced flooding in several areas.

In Jammu and Kashmir, three persons have died in the past three days due to rain-related incidents. A landslide occurred near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari, on the way to the Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall triggered landslips and flash floods in several places. The strong currents of the Beas river washed away a multi-storey hotel and four shops in Manali in Kullu district, officials said. The Manali-Leh highway has been blocked at several points.

In Odisha, more than 170 villages in Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts were submerged for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. Read on.


Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been granted bail four days after he was arrested on allegations of having misused government funds. He is accused of having spent 16.6 million Sri Lankan rupees, or over 48 lakh Indian rupees, of public money for a private overseas tour.

In September 2023, Wickremesinghe had stopped in London after attending a Group of 77 summit in the Cuban capital Havana. The former president and his wife Maithree had reportedly attended a ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton in London.
