Five die of electrocution as temple chariot hits power line during procession


Five persons died of electrocution and four were injured in Hyderabad on Sunday when a vehicle that was part of a Hindu religious procession came in contact with an overhead electric wire, The New Indian Express reported.

The mishap took place in the city’s Ramanthapur area during a Shri Krishna Shobha Yatra procession.

The police said that as the procession was nearing its end, a vehicle carrying the temple chariot came to a halt. About ten persons were trying to push the chariot forward when overhead electricity wires came in contact with it, they said.

Those who died were identified as Krishna, Shrikanth Reddy, Suresh Yadav, Rudra Vikas and Rajendra Reddy.

The Telangana government on Monday announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the dead, The Hindu reported. State minister D Sridhar Babu said the government will bear the medical expenses of those injured.
