Reactor Blast, Announces ₹1 Crore Ex Gratia

Hyderabad, July 2: Days after a devastating explosion claimed 40 lives at its Pashamylaram facility, Telangana-based pharmaceutical company Sigachi Industries Ltd has released an official statement clarifying the nature of the accident. The company denied media reports suggesting that a reactor explosion was the cause of the tragedy, asserting that the actual reason is still under investigation.

“We would like to clarify that the accident was not caused by a reactor explosion at the plant, as mentioned in sections of the media. We await the investigation results and will share updates as they become available,” the company stated.

In a move to support the affected families, Sigachi Industries announced ₹1 crore ex gratia to the next of kin of each of the 40 deceased workers. Additionally, 33 injured workers are currently undergoing treatment, the company confirmed.

Massive Rescue Efforts Underway

Search and rescue teams have been working relentlessly for over 48 hours to locate 13 workers still missing, believed to be trapped under the rubble. Large cranes, JCBs, and rescue machinery have been deployed at the site. However, heavy rainfall on Tuesday night has slowed down progress.

The explosion occurred on Monday morning in the Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) drying unit. At the time, 143 workers were present inside the plant. Only four victims have been identified so far, while the rest were charred beyond recognition.

DNA samples are being collected from the remains and compared with samples from family members at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for identification. Most victims are reportedly migrant workers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.

CM Revanth Reddy Visits Site, Announces Compensation

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy visited the accident site on Tuesday and pledged full support to the victims’ families. He announced:

  • ₹1 crore compensation to each family of the deceased

  • ₹10 lakh for critically injured individuals

  • ₹5 lakh for those with non-critical injuries

  • ₹50,000 as immediate relief for all injured workers

  • ₹1 lakh in cash was handed over to families of 11 victims as interim assistance

Legal Action Initiated

Based on a complaint from a victim’s family member, Sangareddy police have registered a case against Sigachi Industries management. Charges include:

  • Section 105: Culpable homicide not amounting to murder

  • Section 110: Attempt to commit culpable homicide

  • Section 117: Voluntarily causing grievous hurt (BNS)

The company has assured full cooperation with the authorities and announced a 90-day suspension of all operations at the plant to facilitate investigations and safety assessments.
