Gross Value Added (GVA) per worker in agriculture has increased by 54 per cent between fiscal years (FY) 2015-16 and 2024-25, stated a report by the Statistics Ministry released on Sunday. It also highlighted that the number of people covered by social protection systems has risen nearly thrice during the same period.
The report, titled ‘The Sustainable Development Goals – National Indicator Framework (SDG-NIF) Progress Report, 2025’, was released by Rao Inderjit Singh, Statistics and Programme Minister, on Sunday. It stated that the GVA in agriculture per worker rose to ₹94,110 in FY25 from ₹61,247 in FY16, indicating improved agricultural productivity and income per worker in the country. The SDGs NIF serves as the backbone for monitoring SDGs at the national level, offering valuable guidance to policymakers and the implementing agencies of various schemes and programmes.
Further, it said that the population covered by social protection systems/floors has increased to 64.3 per cent in 2025 from from 22 per cent in 2016. Percentage of population using improved drinking water sources in rural areas increased to nearly 100 per cent in FY25 from 94.57 per cent in FY16, indicating significant progress toward universal safe water access in rural India. During this period, the share of renewable energy in the total installed electricity generation rose to over 22 per cent as against around 16 per cent.
Waste management
The installed renewable energy generating capacity in the country rose to over 156 watts per capita from over 64 watts per capita. This indicates “consistent progress toward cleaner and sustainable energy generation in the country,” the report said.
Further, the number of waste recycling plants installed increased to 3,036 in FY25 from 829 in FY20 indicating a significant strengthening of waste management infrastructure. Another indicator highlighted development of start-up culture with a number of recognised start-ups to over 34,000 in 2024, as against over 450 in 2016. It shows strong growth in entrepreneurship across the country.
In order to measure the reduction in inequality, the report noted that the Gini coefficient of household expenditure has decreased to 0.237 in FY24 from 0.283 in FY12 in rural areas. For urban areas it decreased to 0.284 from 0.363 during this period, showing a clear move toward more equal spending and reduced income inequality across both regions. Gini coefficient ranges between 0 and 1, where 0 shows greater equality and 1 shows greater inequality.
