Bumrah’s absence points to rest for 2nd Test

Perhaps the most significant takeaway from the initial nets was the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna. Prior to the series, it had been indicated that Bumrah would not feature in every match to manage his workload. However, after India’s defeat in the first Test, speculation arose whether this plan might be reconsidered. The fact that Bumrah skipped the first practice session strongly suggests he will be rested for the second Test, staying aligned with the original strategy.

Akash Deep, Arshdeep in line for Edgbaston outing

India’s pace attack, barring Bumrah, struggled in the opening Test, prompting serious contemplation of changes. With Bumrah likely to sit out and Prasidh under scrutiny after leaking runs, the door appears open for Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. Both impressed in domestic cricket and could bring fresh energy and variety to the attack on a surface that traditionally aids seamers.

Nitish Reddy pressing case over Shardul

Meanwhile, the all-rounder spot has come under the scanner. Nitish Kumar Reddy was seen bowling extensively alongside Shardul Thakur in videos shared by Revsportz, which was enough to indicate the management’s intent to assess his bowling readiness. Given Reddy’s superior batting credentials, he could edge out Shardul, who neither contributed significantly with the bat nor was heavily relied upon with the ball by Gill in the first Test. Though Shardul did pick up two wickets, India may prefer a batting all-rounder like Reddy to strengthen the lower order while still offering a genuine bowling option.

Two spinners likely at Edgbaston

Another notable shift could come in the spin department. Having opted for a lone spinner in the first Test, India might field two spinners at Edgbaston, especially if the pitch offers signs of turn. In that scenario, Kuldeep Yadav becomes a compelling candidate, given his knack for breaking partnerships with attacking wrist spin. However, the inclusion of Washington Sundar cannot be ruled out either, as he bolsters the batting depth while delivering tidy off-spin.
