We’ve seen some major innovations in VR headset technology, but one thing that’s been holding it back is size. It’s tough to make VR headsets that aren’t big and bulky. Well, VR company Bigscreen VR just unveiled the smallest VR headset on the market, but that doesn’t mean that it’s light on features. The Bigscreen Beyond 2 just hit the market, and it comes with a much-requested feature.
The Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3, and other headsets are great devices, but they can be a pain in the neck to use for extended periods of time. Speaking from experience, the Meta Quest 3S can really weigh your head down after some time. Buying a proper strap with a counterweight like the Bobovr S3 Pro (compatible with the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S) is a good option.
However, Bigscreen came along and asked “What if we just make a small VR headset that’s as functional as the competition?” The company was able to work magic when it came to reducing the size of the VR headset. Thus, we got the incredible Bigscreen Beyond series of headsets.
Bigscreen launches the new Beyond 2
In all fairness, the Meta Quest 3/3S and Apple Vision Pro are XR devices while the Beyond 2 is purely for VR. This means that it lacks the required camera sensors to pull in the real world. In any case, it seems that they like to spend their time in VR more than in AR or MR. So, if you’re a VR nut, then you probably won’t miss the passthrough mode.
This isn’t to discredit Bigscreen’s achievement. Coming in at just 107g (3.8oz), it’s wildly light. While these aren’t for exactly the same purposes, but it’s 79% lighter than the Quest 3 and 83% lighter than the Apple Vision Pro. So, when you’re using it, you’ll have a much more comfortable experience. In fact, it’s a bit lighter than the first-generation Beyond, which was already rather light.
Optics and screen
Light in weight doesn’t mean light on features and functionality. With the Bigscreen, you’re getting an impressive 116° field of view. That’s impressive, and it gives this headset a pretty big sweet spot when you’re viewing content and playing games. Much less of the screen will be blurry.
The company brought breakthrough optics with a pair of 1-inch micro OLED displays with a 2560 x 2560 per eye resolution. This will give you some sharp visuals when you’re watching content. Along with that, they sport an impressive 90Hz refresh rate. It’s not the most fluid, but still looks nice. All of this means that everything you see in the VR world will look crisp and beautiful.
Fit
With the first-generation Beyond, the company offered custom-fit facial cushions. Using an iPhone to create a 3D scan of your face, the company would custom-manufacture a facial cushion for you. This ensures a perfect fit with reduced light leakage.
Well, the company continues this with the Beyond 2. Not only that, but it’s backward compatible with facial cushions from the first-generation product. Aside with that, there’s a one-size-fits-all silicone cushion that you can use if you want to share the headset with your friends.
Custom IPD adjustments
The IPD (interpupillary distance) is one of the most important things to think about when you get a VR headset. This a measurement of how close the lenses are to each other. It’s also a measurement of how close your pupils are to one another. Well, the Beyond 2 comes with a mechanism that allows you to adjust the position of each lens individually.
Eye-tracking
People who used the first-generation device requested eye-tracking and the company delivered. Bigscreen was able to implement an eye-tracking sensor the size of a grain of sand.
Price and availability
If you want to pick up a Bigscreen VR Beyond 2, just know that it’s not exactly cheap. It starts at $1,019. That’s far less than the Apple Vision Pro, but you’ll have to consider that the Meta Quest 3 costs half of the price, and the Quest 3S costs even less.
However, if you want the crisp visuals, superior field of view, reduced weight, customized facial cushion, eye tracking, and incredible colors (Carbon Black, Crystal Clear, and Nuclear Orange), then the price tag should be worth it.
There’s one thing to note; the model of the headset that comes with eye-tracking, called the Beyond 2e, will cost you an additional $200. These headsets will start shipping in April
