It’s that time of the year when the organisers of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) are setting the stage for its 16th edition, which kicks off on August 14. This year, the festival, which brings Indian cinema and talent to Australian shores, has chosen International Emmy Award winner Vir Das as its guest of honour.
At the do, the comedian and actor will be felicitated for his contributions to the Indian entertainment industry and putting Indian comedy on the world map. He has headlined several Netflix specials, including For India (2020) and Vir Das: Landing (2022), and was last seen in Call Me Bae (2024).
Das is naturally elated about the recognition. He said, “It’s humbling to be recognised by IFFM, a festival that celebrates the diversity and strength of Indian storytelling. Comedy has always been my lens to view the world, and to be able to share that journey with audiences across the globe, and be celebrated for it, is truly special.”
The year 2025 is turning out to be remarkable for Das, who will turn director with Happy Patel, which is being backed by Aamir Khan Productions. He will also debut as an author with his book, The Outsider which hits the stands in November.
