Religious conversion: Supreme Court orders probe against Ghaziabad jail officials for not releasing man granted bail in April

The Supreme Court on Wednesday initiated a judicial probe against the Ghaziabad District Jail authorities for failing to release an accused granted bail in April in a case of religious conversion.

The Bench of Justice KV Viswanathan and Justice N Kotiswar Singh asked the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court to designate Principal District and Sessions Judge, Ghaziabad, to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

The Apex Court directed the Principal District and Sessions Judge, Ghaziabad, to investigate whether there was any delay in enlarging the applicant/petitioner and as to why he was detained beyond May 27, 2025.

In case of negligence resulting in delay, the judge would fix responsibility for the same, ordered the Bench and listed the matter for perusal of enquiry report on August 18.

The top court of the country directed the State of Uttar Pradesh to furnish all support and assistance to the District judge to conduct the enquiry.

It further ordered the state government to pay Rs five lakh to the accused and report compliance on Friday.

The Apex Court observed that despite the release order having all details, it was unfortunate that somebody had to undergo all this in this blistering summer.
