When Manisha Koirala said Rajinikanth’s flop finished her South career

Manisha Koirala gained fame in Bollywood with Saudagar (1991). Known for her versatile performances, she starred in critically acclaimed films like 1942: A Love Story (1994), Bombay (1995), Dil Se.. (1998), and Company (2002).

When Rajinikanth’s Baba happened to her, she hoped for a bright career in southern cinema. Had that film become a hit, she would have bagged plum offers from big Telugu and Tamil heroes. “I was receiving offers from South before Baba. Once that film flopped, all offers evaporated,” Manisha said in an interview in 2023.

Baba was released in theatres amid sky-high expectations. The love track between Rajinikanth and Manisha was among the silliest elements in the movie. The film was made as a star vehicle, and the screenplay treated Manisha’s character as insignificant in the overall scheme. AR Rahman’s music was average by the standards of those times.

A cancer survivor, Manisha Koirala has been vocal about health awareness and women’s rights. She also ventured into production and writing.
