Nintendo Switch 2 thieves make off with $1.4 million worth of consoles

Nintendo Switch 2 thieves make off with .4 million worth of consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 is a hot commodity, so much so that the theft of the console in large quantities shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who knows anything about the Switch 2, its popularity, or the third-party reseller market. It was bound to happen sooner or later, thieves making off with enough Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. However, it probably wasn’t expected that a theft of this magnitude would happen this soon.

According to a recent report from Tom’s Hardware, around 2,800 Nintendo Switch 2 consoles were stolen from a truck that was on its way to a GameStop in Texas. The truck was coming from Nintendo of America headquarters, with the theft happening along the route. A post from the Arapahoe Sheriff account on X listed details of the theft on June 17. The cargo was stolen from the truck at or sometime before reaching a Love’s Truck Stop in Bennett, Colorado. The truck driver reported the stolen cargo after noticing at the truck stop that their trailer had been broken into.

Nintendo Switch 2 theft totals $1.4 million in stolen hardware

With around 2,800 consoles now in the hands of thieves, there will be a slight shortage of units available for potential consumers who reside in the area of the intended destination. It’s not clear if all 2,800 units were headed for a single GameStop location in Grapevine, Texas, or if there were to be multiple drop-offs. Either way, GameStop shoppers in Grapevine may have to travel a little further to get their hands on one. The alternative is to wait things out for more shipments to come in.

The total value of the cargo is said to be around $1.4 million, which checks out given the cost of the Switch 2. The regular console retails for $449.99, and the bundle that comes with Mario Kart World retails for $499.99. It’s not made clear in the report how many of each console bundle there were. It is likely, however, that the shipment contained both.

Consumers should be careful about where they buy their console

This is a no-brainer, but consumers should be cautious about where they buy a Nintendo Switch 2. If it isn’t from a big retailer like Best Buy, Amazon, or other similar retailers, then you may want to skip over it. For the time being, at least. As Tom’s Hardware points out, Nintendo tracks the serial numbers of its hardware, and it’s highly likely that it has already figured out the serial numbers of the ones that were stolen. If a consumer happens to buy one of those consoles, there’s a good chance Nintendo could ban the hardware if it ever goes online. In other words, consumers should avoid buying the console from a third-party retailer or reseller.
