Apple’s Plan to Fix Blurry Photos? Two Lasers

The focus speed on most smartphones these days is pretty good. Many of them are a lot faster than compact cameras from the past. But are they perfect? Far from it. This is why Apple could be looking to improve the focus speed of its future iPhones by incorporating the use of lasers.

A laser-focused iPhone

According to a report from The Mac Observer, they discovered a patent filed by Apple that suggests that future iPhones could come equipped with dual lasers to help with autofocusing.

Right now, many smartphones’ cameras rely on an infrared dot projector. While it’s functional, it does fall short in specific scenarios. This is especially true for moving subjects. However, the patent believes that incorporating the use of dual lasers will improve the speed of the iPhone’s camera system and result in sharper photos.

future iPhones lasers

The patent describes the system as having two lasers. When the user lifts their phone to take a photo, both lasers fire simultaneously but at different angles. The sensors then measure how long it takes for the reflections to return. If both sensors come up with the same distance, the iPhone’s camera lens moves into position to take the shot.

If the sensors disagree on the distance, the phone will return to the usual autofocusing method before trying the lasers again. It sounds like there are a lot of moving parts here, but given how fast calculations take, it should all happen almost instantaneously. The lasers can also be used to improve accuracy, which should provide us with clearer photos, especially for moving subjects like kids, cars, and so on.

When will this be implemented?

At the moment, it’s hard to say if and when Apple will implement this patent in an iPhone. Companies like Apple file patents all the time, but many of these patents are never realized. Apple will launch its iPhone 17 later this year. So far, we’ve heard that the iPhone 17 Pro will come with an upgraded 48MP telephoto camera. There are talks about a mechanical aperture. However, we haven’t heard anything about the use of lasers.

It might not even debut in the iPhone 18. Last we heard, the iPhone 18 Pro’s camera upgrade will consist of a variable aperture system and possibly a 200MP sensor. But once again, no mention of a laser autofocus system.
