Meta currently has a partnership with Ray-Ban, which led to the creation of the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. Ray-Ban isn’t necessarily viewed as a luxury brand; more casual, we would say. But if you wanted a pair of luxury smart glasses, a CNBC report reveals that Meta and Prada could be working together on that.
According to the report, Meta and EssilorLuxottica are working together to create a pair of Prada-branded smart glasses. Given Prada’s position in the high-end fashion industry, this pair of smart glasses could be aimed at users who are more fashion-forward or want something with more luxurious branding.
It is unclear what features the glasses could bring to the table, so we can only assume they will be similar to the Ray-Bans, just with a different look and brand. Interestingly enough, this wouldn’t be Meta’s first collaboration with EssilorLuxottica.
For those unfamiliar, EssilorLuxottica is one of the world’s largest eyewear makers. It houses many brands under its umbrella, including Ray-Ban. We had also previously heard that Meta could be working with Oakley, which happens to be another brand under the EssilorLuxottica name. Oakley glasses are typically positioned as eyewear for outdoor enthusiasts.
Its sunglasses feature reflective lenses and have an edgier design. A pair of Oakley smart glasses could appeal to users who love the outdoors and want something to record their adventures with.
Other smart glasses efforts
So far, Meta’s efforts for smart glasses are aimed at casual users who want a piece of tech that fits into their daily lives. However, the company is hoping to appeal to tech lovers too. A report back in April suggests that Meta is working on smart glasses with a built-in display. They are also working on an augmented reality pair of glasses that features AI integration. It will also be able to track eye and hand gestures.
Google might have been the first to go into the market with Google Glass. However, Google was ahead of its time, as Google Glass didn’t really take off. These days, we’re seeing a renewed interest in the wearable. Companies like Snap have also launched their smart glasses. Also, if the rumors are accurate, Apple wants in on the action as well.
