The Nintendo Switch 2 is a remarkably tough piece of video game hardware, providing durability that you probably wouldn’t expect the console to have. After all, it’s thin, it’s light by handheld standards compared to other modern handhelds, and it has a big glass display. The durability of the Nintendo Switch 2 was initially tested during a teardown of the console by JerryRigEverything. In that video, the Switch 2 didn’t come out unscathed. However, it did remain fully functional with basically just cosmetic damage.
In JerryRigEverything’s latest video, the durability of the screen is tested. Suffice it to say, most people shouldn’t have to worry about their screen being damaged if they’re not intentionally applying large amounts of excessive force to it. That doesn’t mean it can’t still break, but it seems a lot less likely than people are probably expecting. That’s good news if you’re accident-prone and you drop your stuff a lot.
Nintendo Switch 2 screen durability is better than you probably expect
Whether you have a Nintendo Switch 2 or not, you’ve probably heard about the protective plastic layer that Nintendo has placed on top of the Switch 2’s display. This is essentially a screen protector that comes already applied, and Nintendo recommends that users don’t remove this. It’s intention is to prevent little bits of glass dust and shards of glass from getting all over the place if the display ends up shattered. Naturally, to test the durability, JerryRigEverything went ahead and ignored that recommendation.
What came afterward was a series of forceful smacks with a heavy pair of pliers. You might think that the display would crack relatively early on. However, it wasn’t until the display had been smacked more than 50 times with the pliers that it eventually shattered. Think about that. More than 50 hits from a hefty metal tool. That suggests that your average drop or smack against a counter or side table will do little to damage the display. Anything can happen, of course, but based on this test, it looks like Nintendo has built a durable console here.
At the end of the day, you still want to try and protect your Switch 2 as best you can. As well as your other electronics. Because this way they can still look nice even after several years. Not to mention function as intended.
