Is AI Going Rogue? Instagram Users Blame Bots for Mass Bans

There’s no doubt that AI is extremely efficient compared to humans. It can make decisions and solve problems in seconds. However, that efficiency might have stepped on some toes in the process. According to Instagram users, mass bans are happening on the platform, and there is speculation that AI could be behind it.

Instagram mass bans—is it AI’s fault?

There is currently no evidence that suggests that AI is to blame for this wave of Instagram mass bans. However, it feels like it.

According to a complaint on Reddit, “Hey everyone, I’m posting here because I honestly don’t know what else to do. My original Instagram account was banned unfairly for violating content policies—but I swear I didn’t do anything wrong. I’ve already submitted multiple appeals, uploaded my ID, and tried reaching out to Meta through all the official channels, but I’ve been completely ignored. It feels like I’m shouting into a void.”

There is also a petition on Change.org asking that Meta be held accountable for its actions. Some users are also suggesting a potential class action lawsuit.

So, why are some speculating that AI is behind these bans? Prior to the use of machine learning, the bulk of content moderation was done by humans. This is a slower process, naturally, but humans understand context better. Sometimes what might be viewed as a policy violation by a machine might not be viewed the same way by a human.

Also, since most users claim that their accounts and actions did not violate Instagram’s policies, they speculate that AI is being applied liberally to moderate content.

Instagram isn’t alone

It’s not a novel idea to use machine learning or AI to moderate content. Like we said, it’s a lot more efficient. However, as advanced as AI is, it can still make mistakes. Instagram isn’t alone in attempting to use AI. Other platforms, such as Pinterest, faced similar complaints earlier this year over mass bans.

Pinterest later admitted its mistake, claiming it was an “internal error.” They also stated that it wasn’t due to AI moderation. If anything, this highlights the need for AI regulation. Right now, the Trump administration is proposing a 10-year moratorium on state-level regulation. This means that all AI regulation will be done on a federal level.

However, opponents of the policy argue that this could take too long. They also argue that states are more agile when it comes to implementing rules and policies.
