Oops-Proof Your Purchases—Google Play Gets a Swipe Upgrade

Have you ever made an accidental purchase on the Play Store? If you have, you’re not alone. Thankfully, Google has policies in place that allow you to get refunds. However, if you’d rather not go through the hassle of a refund, this new gesture that’s part of the latest Google Play Store update could be a godsend.

New Google Play Store purchase gesture

Before this update, whenever you wanted to purchase an app on the Play Store, you’d tap a “buy” button and then confirm it again. This method already ensures that users want to make the purchase. However, users could still accidentally make a purchase.

This is why Google is changing the “buy” button in the Play Store to a new gesture action, according to a report from 9to5Google. This new gesture requires users to swipe across the bottom of the screen to confirm their purchase. Google says this is done to prevent accidental purchases. We won’t say it’s impossible, but the added friction will make it a lot harder to buy something you didn’t mean to accidentally.

This change is part of the update to version 46.5.19-31 of the Play Store. Google also brings its new gesture action to other apps, like Google TV. If you’re running the latest version, you should see these changes. Otherwise, make sure to update your Play Store and you’re good to go.

This gesture was initially spotted earlier this year

This isn’t the first time we’ve learned about this new swipe gesture. It was spotted back in April. However, its availability was limited to a handful of users at that time. Presumably, Google is testing it before rolling it out to the general public. Now, it looks like the feature is live for all users.

This feature could also be handy for parents whose kids might use their devices. We’ve all heard the horror stories of kids racking up thousands of dollars in credit card bills by making in-game purchases, so hopefully this added friction will reduce the number of such incidents from happening again in the future.
