IMD Update: Monsoon intensify over South Peninsula for 4 days, heavy rainfall in Karnataka

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said the reviving monsoon will be active over the South Peninsula during four days from Thursday with heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Karnataka.

The same outlook is applicable for three days rom Friday over Konkan and Goa as seasonal rains break out of a hiatus of more than two weeks after a spectacular and early onset over Kerala on May 24, earliest since 2009.

‘Low’ expected to form

It is an accepted fact a productive onset surge cannot go on indefinitely unless backed up by a helpful low-pressure area/depression over the Bay of Bengal, nor is it unusual for the monsoon to go on a hiatus after such a phase. On Monday, Its northern limit continued to pass through Mumbai, Ahilyanagar, Adilabad, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sandhead Island, and Balurghat. The alignment will start to move forward with formation of a helpful circulation/‘low’ over the Bay in next few days.

Western disturbance

A western disturbance as a trough over the Iran-Afghanistan border and almost dipping into the North Arabian Sea persisted on Monday. An upper air cyclonic circulation lay in anticipation over north-west Bay and adjoining coast of north Odisha and southern West Bengal. The deep limb of the disturbance extending southwards is expected to interact with the circulation lover north-west Bay and adjoining north Odisha and southern West Bengal coasts to set up the ‘low’.

Clouds massed up over Bay of Bengal on Monday afternoon likely signalling impending break of a monsoon hiatus lasting past two weeks. Dry continental air free of clouds (red and yellow) is seen confined to west and north-west India.

Heavy rain likely

Satellite pictures indicated the Bay has to wait for the incoming disturbance along the northern latitudes for a helping hand since it was not forthcoming from in-house just yet. The IMD did allude to this in as many words, but pointed to the Bay circulation that has already triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall over Marathawada and South Interior Karnataka and heavy rainfall over Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, Telangana and Rayalaseema during till Monday morning.

Monsoon easterlies

Cloud bands waited over the Bay off the coast of Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneshwar. IMD’s numerical model predictions indicated the ‘low’ is expected to form over the Odisha-West Bengal coast, and push towards Central India. This would help the monsoon easterlies to revive and fill the region, bringing widespread rain over East and Central India.

Thunder squalls warned

Moderate rainfall may persist over Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim for three days from Wednesday; for five days from Monday over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and for as many days over Bihar from Wednesday; and four days from Tuesday over Jharkhand. Thunder squalls have been warned over Vidarbha on Wednesday; three days over Chhattisgarh; and on Wednesday and Thursday over Bihar. In between, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over hills of West Bengal and Sikkim and Odisha.
