IO Interactive, the world-famous developer behind the laureate video game franchise of HITMAN, is geared to bring about a redefinition of the James Bond video game experience with 007 First Light, set to release in 2026. The highly anticipated show will be available on major platforms, among which are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
It was officially revealed during the State of Play, and the coming months should bring further details on the gameplay and the storyline. IO Interactive’s showcase is scheduled for June 6 at 6 PM PDT. According to CEO Hakan Abrak, the studio is “beyond excited,” with their 25 years in the action-adventure game industry having presented them with a “monumental opportunity” to introduce 007 back into gaming with a fresh cinematic adventure.
An Unprecedented Origin Story
007 First Light is presented as a standalone, re-imagined James Bond origin story, purposefully moving away from directly adapting existing films. Players will step into the shoes of a young, resourceful, and at times reckless recruit within MI6’s rigorous training program. This portrayal features the youngest Bond fans have ever encountered, at merely 26 years old, allowing players to witness his journey before he earns his “00” status and before the familiar “tuxedos and martinis” era.
The narrative begins with Bond as a Naval air crewman, whose heroic actions unexpectedly propel him into MI6’s challenging Double 0 program. A pivotal plot element involves a mission to apprehend a rogue agent, 009, described as a “master manipulator,” which tragically concludes with severe consequences. Bond is then compelled to collaborate with his reluctant mentor, Greenway, to uncover a deep-seated conspiracy and prevent a looming coup at the very core of the State. The game is set in the modern day, not as a historical piece, implying Bond’s birth year around 2000.
Innovative Gameplay and Core Features
Harnessing its 25-year-or-so history of creating great immersive action-adventure experiences, IO Interactive wants to push the cinematic side of a James Bond game as far as it can go. Being a third-person action-adventure, 007 First Light combines the classic IO Interactive stealth and action gameplay mechanics seen in the Hitman franchise with the complex world of Bond and MI6. Players are free to follow their approach; from entering silent infiltration mode to loud gunfire battles using their bare fists or bruising firepower, with gadgets for the job or bluffing their way past some guards.
Bond’s adventures will take the players to some breathtaking the dazzling landscapes from the snowy mountains down to sunny beaches. They can also test their skills inside MI6 and replay their favourite missions with modifiers offered for the extended purpose of spy games. Players will be interacting with those iconic characters like M, Q, and Moneypenny, plus some new faces of their mentor, who guides Bond, Greenway. The entire experience runs on IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier engine.
Subtle Nods to a Storied Legacy
Despite its commitment to an original narrative, 007 First Light thoughtfully incorporates numerous homages and understated references paying tribute to the long and rich history of the James Bond books and films. For instance, the young Bond in this game has a long, thin scar running down his cheek, a very distinguishing physical characteristic from Ian Fleming’s original book version of Bond.
The character of 009, called a “master manipulator,” has been compared to the treacherous 006 portrayed by Sean Bean in GoldenEye. Bond enters the Q branch to pick a watch that will set off an explosion on a motorcycle- again, this is a clear reference to Bond’s famous watches, spectacularly featured all over the series. The watches in the game were made through a partnership with Omega, thus also recalling Daniel Craig’s association in Casino Royale.

The announcement trailer not only served justice to Bond lore but finished outright with the beautiful theme from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Future Aspirations and Technical Enhancements
While IO Interactive has not officially confirmed the actor portraying James Bond, many observers have speculated it could be Patrick Gibson from Dexter: Original Sin, given his appearance in the trailer. IO Interactive has expressed its ambition for 007: First Light to potentially be the commencement of a trilogy. For PlayStation 5 users, the game will be enhanced for PlayStation 5 Pro, leveraging PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and delivering optimised performance, allowing for 60 FPS in Quality Mode.
