Mumbai man booked in dowry harassment case

The Mumbai Police have filed an FIR against a man and his parents for reportedly harassing his 35-year-old wife over dowry, according to an official.

The woman, living in the Malad area, married the man in 2021, with her father covering all wedding expenses and providing jewellery worth approximately Rs 4.75 crore, reported PTI.

However, she subsequently encountered harassment from her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law, who allegedly continued to demand additional dowry, stated an official from the Dindoshi Police Station on Wednesday.

The situation worsened after she gave birth to a girl, with her in-laws expressing displeasure as they were expecting a male child, the official said.

The woman also alleged that her mother-in-law took away all her jewellery and has refused to return it.

Based on her complaint, the Dindoshi Police have registered a case against her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law under the Dowry Prohibition Act and provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official added.

Pune dowry case: Victim Vaishnavi Hagawane`s father-in-law remanded in judicial custody

In a similar case, a Pune court on Tuesday remanded the father-in-law and brother-in-law of Vaishnavi Hagawane, who allegedly died by suicide over dowry harassment in Pune district of Maharashtra, to judicial custody, reported PTI.

Another accused in the case, Nilesh Chavan, who had allegedly threatened Vaishnavi`s kin, was remanded in police custody till Saturday after the prosecution submitted that the chats exchanged between him and members of the Hagawane family had not yet been recovered from his mobile phone.

Chavhan was produced in the court at the end of his police remand on Tuesday.

The prosecution informed the court that it had no objection to Vaishnavi`s father-in-law, Rajendra, and his son, Sushil, being remanded in judicial custody for 14 days, PTI reported.

Vaishnavi (26) allegedly died by suicide in Pune`s Bavdhan area on May 16, with her kin alleging that her in-laws and others had tortured her for dowry.

Rajendra Hagawane was subsequently expelled from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Along with him, Vaishnavi`s husband Shashank, mother-in-law Lata, brother-in-law Sushil, and sister-in-law Karishma were arrested in the alleged dowry harassment-suicide case.

Later, the Warje Police booked Chavan for pointing a gun at Vaishnavi`s kin. A case was registered against him under the Juvenile Justice Act at Bavdhan Police Station for not taking proper care of Vaishnavi`s child, which was handed over to him by her in-laws after her death, an official had said earlier.
