Your Own Digital Companion

One of the most exciting additions under testing is WhatsApp’s new AI chatbot builder. This feature will allow users to create their own digital AI companions directly within the app, using intuitive and customizable templates.

The goal is to enable users to personalize their chatbot’s name, avatar, and personality traits. Powered by Meta AI’s Llama large language models, these bots will respond to user prompts in natural language, just like ChatGPT or other modern AI assistants. While the initial purpose may appear to be for causal interactions or novelty, it opens the door to highly productive use cases such as personalized reminders, educational aids, mental wellness support, or even basic customer service functions. 

The feature appears under a new section that allows users to design their AI companion in just a few taps, and has been made available to a select group of beta testers via the lay Store. The chatbot creation process takes place in a new AI Studio tab, which already includes a selection of pre-made chatbots users can interact with. 

Users can opt to write a detailed prompt, up to 1,000 characters, describing what the chatbot’s role and purpose will be. Taking this input, WhatsApp suggests personality traits and roles, like helper, mentor, or teacher, which are also subject to change according to the user’s wishes.

Although the chatbot creation tool is still under internal testing and not publicly rolled out, its presence in the beta indicates a strong focus on integrating AI meaningfully into WhatsApp’s platform.

Another small but welcome feature, regarding the Meta AI, is the ability to directly forward messages to the chatbot. This simplifies the way users interact with the AI, making it all the easier to generate queries or add more context, enabling Meta AI to come up with more accurate and personalized responses. It appears that this feature is being tested on the public, as some beta testers have reported its availability on their devices.

The “Copy Message” Feature

While the AI chatbot grabbed headlines, another subtle yet valuable feature is also being tested: the ability to copy individual messages across platforms. This enhancement is currently visible to select iOS and Android beta testers and could soon become a staple feature in stable builds.

Previously, WhatsApp allowed users to forward messages, star them, or quote them in replies. However, copying a single message within a thread, especially useful in large groups, was surprisingly not straightforward. With this update, users can hold on to any message, choose “copy,” and paste it elsewhere, just as they would in email or SMS apps.

This feature brings WhatsApp up to par with competitors like Telegram, which have long supported similar functionality. In group discussions, or work-related conversations, or when dealing with sensitive information that users prefer to transfer without metadata like sender names or timestamps, having a clean “copy message” function is vital.

It is a small quality-of-life improvement, but it shows how WhatsApp continues to listen to user feedback and refine the smallest usability gaps.

Rollout Timeline and Availability

As for now, both the AI chatbot builder and the message copy feature are in beta and not yet widely available. Both of these features are under active testing and will be released in phases based on stability and user feedback.

For users eager to try these tools, joining the WhatsApp beta program on Google Play or Apple TestFlight remains the only path for early access. However, as these features become more stable, a global rollout is expected, maybe within the next few months.

Given WhatsApp’s history of thorough testing and gradual deployment, it is likely that privacy settings, user education, and performance optimizations will accompany the public launch.
