Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell retires from One-Day Internationals

Australia`s premier all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, has announced his retirement from the One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

While speaking on a `Final Word Podcast`, the all-rounder stated that he conducted a chat with George Bailey and stated that he won`t be available for the ODI World Cup 2027.

“We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him `I don`t think I am going to make that, it`s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own`,” said Maxwell.

He also stated that considering his body condition, the 36-year-old felt he was letting the team down.

“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how body was reacting to the conditions. I had a good chat with (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward,” he added.

Debuting in the format for Australia in 2012, Glenn Maxwell has been a part of 149 ODI matches, in which he has scored 3,990 runs. His career best score in the 50-over format was an unbeaten 201 runs. The right-hander also has four centuries and 23 half-centuries to his name.

The 36-year-old was also handy with the ball as he drew curtains on his career with 77 wickets in ODIs.

One of his most remarkable ODI outings came during the ODI World Cup 2023, which was held in India. In a match against Afghanistan, Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals when Maxwell entered the ground. Struggling with severe cramps, the Melbourne-born dropped one of the most historic knocks in the format.

Facing 128 deliveries, Glenn Maxwell played an unbeaten knock of 201 runs against Afghanistan, which was laced with 21 boundaries and 10 maximums. Riding on his knock, the Pat Cummins-led Australia defeated Afghanistan by three wickets.

His strike rate of 126 is the second highest in ODI cricket, behind only the West Indian heavy hitter Andre Russell. Following his retirement, Cricket Australia released a statement which read, “Maxwell has made the decision to prioritise his preparation for the 2026 ICC Men`s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the Big Bash League and his other global commitments”.

Earlier in the year, his fellow teammate Marcus Stoinis, too, drew curtains on his ODI career.

In the ongoing IPL 2025, Maxwell was ruled out mid-tournament due to a broken finger injury. Punjab Kings have now reached the IPL 2025 final, which is scheduled to be played against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on June 3.
