Royal Challengers Bengaluru missed a crucial opportunity to solidify a top-two finish in the IPL 2025 league standings, succumbing to a 42-run defeat against a spirited Sunrisers Hyderabad unit in Lucknow on Friday.
Despite the setback, RCB remain firmly in the playoff race with 17 points, but have now dropped to third place behind Gujarat Titans (18 points) and Punjab Kings (17 points), with their net run rate suffering a notable dip.
Chasing a daunting target of 232, set up largely by an extraordinary unbeaten knock of 94 from Ishan Kishan, RCB showed early intent and promise. The chase, though steep, was approached with aggression and tactical clarity. Phil Salt spearheaded the reply with a dynamic 62 off 32 deliveries, showcasing the fearless brand of cricket that has defined RCB’s campaign this season.
Virat Kohli, anchoring from the other end, compiled a fluent 43 off 25 balls, playing some vintage strokes that lifted the run rate and kept the target within sight. Stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma added a brisk 24 from 15 balls in the middle overs, giving RCB a real shot at pulling off their highest-ever run chase in IPL history.
However, the steep nature of the task meant the margin for error was minimal. While RCB`s top order fired admirably, the middle and lower order couldn’t sustain the momentum, eventually folding for 189. The target proved just out of reach on a surface that flattened out beautifully under lights, aiding the batters but also exposing any missteps with the bat.
This defeat, RCB’s first on the road in the 2025 season, may have dented their NRR and top-two ambitions, but the team’s overall form and momentum remain strong. The franchise has already secured a playoff berth, and with one league game left, they still have a shot at reclaiming a top-two spot, crucial for gaining an extra chance in the qualifiers.
Despite the outcome, RCB can take heart from their fighting spirit in the chase, their consistent top-order performances, and their strong showings away from home. The team management will now look to reset, address the finishing concerns, and come back stronger in their final league encounter.
