One of the biggest draws of using a VR/XR headset is being able to use it for workouts. It’s rather easy to build up a sweat playing a few simple games in virtual reality. Well, if you’ve become accustomed to tracking how much you sweat via Quest Move, you’d be disappointed to know that Meta is discontinuing it.
In case you don’t know what Quest Move is, think of it like the companion app for your smart watch. You’re used to seeing a rundown of how many calories you’ve burned through the day. Well, Quest Move is an app that tracks how many calories you burned while in VR and how long you moved while in VR. It also allows you to pair your smartwatch or fitness tracker to also track your heart rate.
It’s a fun app for people who want to know how much of a workout their getting while playing Beat Saber. As fun as it is, all things must come to an end.
Meta is discontinuing Quest Move
People who love to use this app will need to find an alternative, and they’ll need to do it within the next couple of weeks. During an Instagram AMA, Meta’s head of Reality Labs Andrew Bosworth mentioned that the app will soon lose support. He said, “We have a small but loyal crowd who really uses this app. Unfortunately, it is not enough of a crowd to justify the expense of continuing to maintain it and keep it going“.
A pretty straightforward comment, and it makes sense. Why pay money to support a feature that people aren’t using? If you’ve been using Quest Move, then you’re going to need to find an alternative before March 31st, as that’s when Meta will pull the plug.
It’s unfortunate when an app or service we love gets discontinued, and Quest Move is a useful service. However, that’s how things go in the world of tech.
