The Adaptive Joystick for Xbox makes games even more accessible

Summary: Microsoft has announced a new controller aimed at players with disabilities called the Xbox Adaptive Joystick. It was designed as a companion accessory for the Xbox Adaptive Controller or other Xbox controllers, and adds even more ways for people with disabilities to play games.

Microsoft has been championing better accessibility in gaming for years with the Xbox Adaptive Controller, and now it’s adding to that with the launch of the new Xbox Adaptive Joystick.

This new accessory launches today and is officially available from the Microsoft Store directly. It’s also quite a bit more affordable than the Adaptive Controller with its $29.99 retail price. What’s cool, is that if you still want or need the Adaptive Controller, it works in conjunction with it. Worth noting is that the availability of the Joystick is exclusively through the Microsoft Store. So if you want to buy it, it looks like you won’t be able to pick it up on Amazon or at Best Buy.

That could change eventually, but for now, Microsoft confirms it will be the only retailer. While Microsoft already offers the Adaptive Controller, the Adaptive Joystick is intended to expand the capability for gamers with disabilities to play their favorite games, because everyone’s experience is different. “With more than 429 million players with disabilities worldwide, we know each player has unique needs and preferences for how they choose to play,” Microsoft says.

The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is a singular wired controller

In terms of connectivity, the Xbox Adaptive Joystick is a singular wired controller. It plugs directly into the Xbox console or a Windows 11 PC. You can remap the buttons using a special app to customize the controls as well. The Xbox Accessories app is available on PC as well as the Xbox consoles.

For the controls, the Adaptive Joystick has seven total buttons. There are two on the back of the controller, four on the front, and then the stick press. There’s also a fairly lengthy 9-foot braided USB-C to USB-A cable in the package.

It was designed as a companion accessory

This is probably the most important part of Microsoft’s new Adaptive Joystick. The company says that it was designed to be a companion accessory to either the Xbox Adaptive Controller or other Xbox Series X|S controllers. In other words, you can’t use this on its own. There are two methods for the setup. One is plugging directly into your console or PC.

If you go this route, you’ll also need to use the Xbox Controller Assist feature to link it to another controller. The other method involves plugging it into one of the two USB-A ports on the Xbox Adaptive Controller. The Adaptive Controller plugs directly into your console or PC.
