Right now, a handful of companies have at least dabbled in foldable screen devices. Samsung, Huawei, HONOR, TECNO, Google, Lenovo, Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus are the main companies to bring devices to the market, and that number is set to rise. According to a new rumor, Amazon might bring a foldable laptop.
Saying that this is out of left field would be an understatement; it’s out of a completely different baseball field. Amazon does have a selection of devices on the market, but they’re not what you’d call technical marvels. It has its Fire tablets, Kindle ebook readers, and Echo devices. However, people mostly associate it with being a massive online store.
Amazon might be working on a foldable laptop
Even though this news is from an extremely reputable source, you’ll want to take it cautiously. We’re still dealing with super early information, and anything could happen between now and the official launch. That reputable source is Ming-Chi Kuo. He uploaded a decent-sized post to X talking about the device.
According to the post, Amazon is in the very beginning stages of developing the device. So, it could still be nothing more than sketches, blueprints, and hopeful dreams. Kuo states that development on the device “has not yet officially kicked off.” If Amazon does follow through with the device, we shouldn’t expect to see anything from it for several years. “If development progresses as planned, it is projected to enter mass production in late 2026 or 2027.”
So, if everything goes swimmingly, we won’t see it hit the market until at least 2028. One can only imagine where the laptop and foldable device markets will be in three years. For all we know, the foldable laptop market could be more mainstream at that point. We know that Amazon won’t have any competition from Apple at that point, as the Cupertino company isn’t expected to start mass production on its foldable laptop until late 2028 at the latest.
So many questions remain
Right now, there’s no information about the foldable laptop, as Amazon is still fleshing that out. What makes this news such a surprise is that there’s a massive leap from the most advanced Fire tablet to a foldable laptop. We’d be less surprised if Amazon wanted to start with a regular laptop first.
Also, there’s no telling what the company will do for the software. A safe bet would be to go with Windows and just load some Amazon goodness onto it. However, there is word that Amazon is working on its own home-grown operating system for its device, ditching Android.
There’s also the matter of price. Amazon’s devices aren’t particularly expensive. However, we’re sure that its foldable laptop will cost an arm and a leg. All of these questions will slowly be answered as the years go on.
