India’s air passenger traffic maintains over 8% y-o-y growth

Healthy demand, coupled with capacity addition, pushed India’s domestic passenger traffic higher by 8.45 per cent in April 2025 on a year-on-year basis.

According to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s scheduled domestic flight operators ferried over 1.43 crore passengers last month, up from 1.32 crore in April 2024.

On a sequential basis, the passenger traffic had grown by over 8 per cent in March 2025 to around 1.45 crore.

“Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-April 2025 were 575.13 lakh against 523.46 lakh during the corresponding period of the previous year, thereby registering an annual growth of 9.87 per cent and monthly growth of 8.45 per cent,” the DGCA said in its monthly passenger traffic report.

Notably, airline major IndiGo achieved the highest market share among all the domestic airlines during the month under review.

The airline increased its market share to 64.1 per cent in April from 64 per cent in March. It ferried 91.72 lakh passengers last month, compared to 93.09 lakh in March.

Similarly, Air India Group’s (Air India and Air India Express) posted market share gains. The group improved its market share from 26.7 per cent in March to 27.2 per cent in April, with 38.90 lakh passengers flown.

Besides, Akasa Air’s market share saw a standstill at 5 per cent after carrying 713,000 passengers during the month.

Furthermore, Alliance Air’s share remained constant at 0.5 per cent, carrying 0.76 lakh passengers.

In contrast, SpiceJet’s market share declined to 2.6 per cent in April from 3.3 per cent in March. The airline ferried 3.79 lakh passengers last month.

Additionally, Star Air maintained its market share at 0.4 per cent, carrying 0.62 lakh passengers.
