Dehuli massacre: UP court awards death sentence to 3

A special court in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday awarded death sentence to three persons for their alleged involvement in the cold-blooded murder of 24 Dalits, committed 44 years ago.

Earlier last week, Special Judge Indira Singh of the Mainpuri court had convicted Kaptaan Singh, Ramsevak, and Rampal Singh, all in their early 70s, for their involvement in the gruesome incident.

While pronouncing the quantum of sentence today, the court also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on the convicts.

Special Judge Indira Singh observed that the crime not only destroyed the social harmony and structure, but was also a shame on the law and order.

The Special Court said since the case fell under the ‘rarest of the rare’ category, on account of the brutality done with the victims, it would be justified to award death penalty to the convicts.

The verdict would not only act as a deterrent principle of punishment, but also as an instrument of justice to the victims and their families, it added.

Kaptaan Singh, who is currently on bail, attended the proceedings in person. Ramsevak was brought from Mainpuri jail. Rampal Singh had filed an application seeking exemption from attending the proceedings. The court rejected his petition and issued a non-bailable warrant for his arrest.

On November 18, 1981, a group of 17 dacoits, dressed in police uniforms, led by Radheshyam Singh (alias Radhey) and Santosh Singh (alias Santosha), murdered 24 members of a Dalit family living in Dehuli village of Uttar Pradesh, to seek revenge against Dalit witnesses, who testified against upper-caste criminals.

The victims included seven women and two children, aged six months and two years.

A villager named Layak Singh filed an FIR in the case against 20 persons under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 396 (dacoity with murder), among other charges.

Out of these, 14 have died over the years, three have been awarded death penalty, while others remain absconding till date.

The absconders include one Gyan Chand alias Ginna, against whom, separate legal proceedings have been initiated in the court.

The case was transferred from Mainpuri to Allahabad. On October 19, 2024, the case was transferred to the Mainpuri Sessions Court. The Special Court heard the case on the orders of the District Judge.
