Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai on Monday said members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) should come together as one Bar with one Vision.
In his speech at the debate between presidential and secretary candidates for the SCBA election to be held on May 20 (Tuesday), Senior Advocate Rai pushed for greater unity among the Bar. He said many fellow members are struggling for their basic needs like a proper workplace or even houses.
In this regard, Rai recalled that long before he contested SCBA elections, he got land allotted for Supreme Towers in Noida for advocates to have homes of their own. He said the then Chief Minister had asked if they needed 25 acres for the project but finally they got 10 acres.
The senior advocate said during his tenure as Vice President of the SCBA, a Railway Reservation Counter was operationalised within the Supreme Court premises. He said during the same time he founded the health committee, e-committee and the grievance redressal committee.
Rai said he has always been approachable for every member of the association. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, he said he visited almost each and every member at their homes and hospitals to keep tabs on their health. With mediation assuming a larger dimension in these times, the Senior Advocate recalled that he had got some 250 new mediators empanelled and the system started working well.
In his to-do list when elected president, Senior Advocate Rai said he will get started on the construction of new chambers for advocates within 2 months at ITO block. Similarly, he said talks have been initiated with the state governments in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana for launching new housing schemes. These would also have educational complexes for members of the Bar.
He said there was to be term and life insurance policies of minimum Rs 2 crore through ICICI Lombard. The same thing has now been brought down to Rs 50 lakh. So a minimum Rs 50 lakh health cover has been ensured. He said it is unfair that SCBA members can’t access the CGHS clinic and the new Ayurveda centre in the new building and that he will make sure each and every member of the Bar gets access to these facilities.
Rai said he will sort out ongoing issues with the Registry, sequence hearing has to go and circulation of letter should be allowed with certain conditions. Similarly, we will regularly organise training and mentorship programmes like mediation, arbitration, Rai said.
The Senior Advocate said the supremacy of the GBM will not be allowed to be compromised. The air ticketing discount scheme which was discontinued will be brought back again. All these facilities will also be for clerks to utilise; the clerks will also get a Rs 5 lakh insurance scheme, he said.
Promising better co-ordination between the Bar and Bench, Senior Advocate Rai reminded SCBA members that he is known for accomplishing what he promises. He said he is not like the leaders of the Bar who often go missing when they are needed for the SCBA members and would be with them whenever they required his presence.
