YouTube’s Updated Miniplayer On Android Finally Meets Users’ Expectations

YouTube has been experimenting with its miniplayer on Android for some time now. Yesterday, the platform took to X to inform that it has responded to users’ feedback and updated the miniplayer experience. YouTube specifically noted that “the design has also been given a little refresh.” As it turns out, the updated YouTube miniplayer is now rolling out on Android.

YouTube is rolling out an updated miniplayer following users’ feedback

As you may know, the YouTube app switched to a floating design last year that took effect after picture-in-picture. While the updated miniplayer allowed users to watch the video while browsing the app, many complained about the design being obtrusive. That shouldn’t be a problem anymore with the updated miniplayer design.

The control strip featuring the play/pause button has been removed from the updated YouTube miniplayer. You also won’t see the 10-second rewind/skip option. With the updated design, YouTube miniplayer displays the play/pause button as a persistent icon that appears at the top-left corner. However, it disappears after a few seconds.

The close (X) button is still there at the top right, but with a circular backdrop to match the UI of the play/pause button. The bottom edge of the updated miniplayer still displays the red progress bar. You also get a repeat button to watch the video again once it ends. Similar to the older design, you can always resize the updated YouTube miniplayer on Android.

You can now hide the miniplayer, too

That’s not all; you can even tuck the updated YouTube miniplayer to the left or right of the screen. This way, you can freely scroll through the app without any distraction. There’s also a handle that pulls it right back to the main view and resumes the video right where you left off. Earlier today, folks over at 9to5Google were able to see this specific change to the miniplayer on the YouTube Android app version 20.19.37.
