Google Photos’ New Quick Edits Feature Has Your Back

The cameras and image processing algorithms on our smartphones are amazing these days. Photos are pretty much good to go straight out of the camera. However, if you notice that a photo needs a bit of touching up before sharing, Google has announced a new Quick Edits feature for Google Photos.

Google Photos Quick Edits

Editing your photos in Google Photos isn’t new. However, there might be times when a photo you’re about to share has some issues. Maybe you realize it’s too dark, or you notice its orientation is wrong. Or maybe you want to crop something out. Now with Quick Edits, Google Photos lets you make those edits right before you share it.

We wouldn’t call it a groundbreaking feature. However, it is a nice quality-of-life update. You’re basically given one last chance (so to speak) to edit a photo before you send it out into the world.

Some things worth noting

That being said, these editing options aren’t exactly deep or comprehensive. You can crop photos or use Google’s auto-enhance feature. But if you’re looking to tweak things like the exposure, contrast, AWB, and more, you’ll need to go back to the app to do it. Also, another catch is that it only works for images that haven’t been edited.

According to Google, “The Quick Edits screen is available for your original photos or images you haven’t edited yet. It typically doesn’t appear for photos that have been edited and sorted into document albums such as receipts and screenshots.”

One last thing to note is that this Quick Edits feature for Google Photos may add an extra step when you’re trying to share photos. The feature will pop up automatically when you go to share an image. This could be annoying for some users. But luckily, Google is giving users the option to turn it off via the Settings icon on the screen.

Google says that the new feature is available on Google Photos running on Android 14 or up. So, if you don’t see the feature yet, make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of both Google Photos and Android to take advantage of it.
