This bug shoves YouTube Shorts down your throat

Even though TikTok’s fate in the U.S. hangs in the balance, the war for short-form video wages on. YouTube’s TikTok competitor is YouTube Shorts, and they’ve become a large part of the experience. However, a bug in the app is shoving YouTube Shorts down users’ throats. When users open the app, it instantly goes to the Shorts tab rather than the Home tab.

This issue has been going on for some time. In fact, we here at Android Headlines have been seeing it for several months if not over a year. It seems to be ramping up as more people are reporting on it now.

This bug puts YouTube shorts on the front page

We’re sure that this is a bug because it happens sporadically. In our experience, the app would open regularly most of the time with it opening with a Short only some of the time. Also, neither YouTube nor Google made any announcement about a new feature.

So, it looks like a software issue. It’s only getting attention now that it’s been happening for so long. At this point, it doesn’t seem that the company has acknowledged the issue just yet. When it does, we’ll update this article.

A walkaround

At the moment, there’s no permanent solution for users. According to 9To5Google, users could clear the app’s storage. This is the equivalent of installing and downloading the app without uninstalling it. You’ll just need to log back into the app when you start it up again.

To clear your storage, go to the home screen of the app drawer and hold your finger down on the YouTube app. When the little popup appears, tap on the App info button (the “i” in a circle). Scroll down to the Storage section and find the option to clear the storage.

However, there are a few things to note. Firstly, if you have any videos downloaded, they’ll be erased from your device. Also, this solution seems to work only if you don’t open any Shorts afterward. So, you’d have to have a religious hatred of YouTube Shorts for this solution to be viable.

Other than that, all you can do is wait for YouTube to step in with an update to fix the issue.
