There is a reason why companies like Apple, Samsung, and Google don’t bring AI to all their devices. For starters, hardware is a limiting factor. Secondly, these companies probably want you to upgrade to their latest devices, and AI is one way to tempt you. There are workarounds. But in the case of Samsung phones, the company has disabled AI on unsupported devices if you update its Internet Browser app.
According to a post on X by @Feruzbek_101, Samsung is advising you not to update to v28.0.059 of the Samsung Internet Browser. Apparently, the latest version of the app disables AI functionality from the browser on officially unsupported devices.
But how were these AI features running on phones not officially supported? Well, for context, users on Reddit discovered a workaround that allowed them to enable Samsung’s Browsing Assist AI on unsupported models. This feature, part of Samsung Internet, uses AI to help summarize and translate webpages.
Disabling AI access on unsupported phones
Unfortunately, the firm caught on, and the latest update to Samsung Internet has disabled access to the AI features. The app’s changelog does not specifically mention it, though—it just says that it fixes bugs and improves stability. We’re not sure why Samsung is being so stingy with its AI features.
According to the Reddit post, users have no issue using the feature on unsupported phones so far. This means that, unlike some other AI features that might be more hardware-dependent, this seems to be working just fine. So, Samsung’s decision to remove it doesn’t sound like it’s because they’re worried about compatibility or optimization but more about protecting their bottom line.
We would like to see more AI features released on lower-end phones. However, we understand that this is how Samsung wants to differentiate its newer and higher-end phones from its entry-level offerings. So, if you’re a Samsung user who has been taking advantage of this workaround, hold off on updating Samsung Internet for as long as you can if you want to keep using the feature.
