Madhuri Dixit quit Bollywood while she still ruled and decided to settle in the US after marrying surgeon, Dr Shriram Nene. She gave up the limelight for cosy domesticity and talked with fondness about grocery store visits, school runs and raising their two songs. Equally surprising was the decision of Madhuri and Dr Nene to return to India after a decade in 2011 after giving up his successful practice in the US.
While both Madhuri and Dr Nene speak fondly of living a life of anonymity in the US, there were moments that Madhuri’s fans found her whereabouts and would drive all the way to Denver to spot her. “They would come to know that I live here in Denver. Cars would circle around my house and when they took the third circle, my neighbours would get scared,” Madhuri had told actor Saumya Tandon during an interview.
“Once there was a car parked right outside my gate and people were sitting inside it for a long time. My neighbour then called me, ‘I think there is something happening. There’s a car right outside your door and it hasn’t moved in past three hours. Should we call the police? I am scared.’ I told her don’t be scared. I’m sure it’s just someone who wants to take a look at me.”
She also recalled a hilarious moment when a passerby was shocked to see the star doing something so humdrum as washing a car. “Hum log ko baccho ko leke gaadi dhone ka bada shauk tha. Bacchon ko bahut maza aata hai paani mein, sabun se khelne mein. So humlog wash karre hain car and suddenly fans ki gaadi jaarai hai side se aur dekh rahe hain…’arre Madhuri Dixit gaadi dhorahi hain’ (We used to like washing cars with our kids. They really liked playing with water and bubbles. So we’d be washing our car and a carful of fans would pass us by. They would look at us and say ‘Arre! Madhuri Dixit is washing cars!’),” she added.
She also recalled her first grocery store run, which she had to do ‘with a thumping heart’. “In India, you are so dependent on your maid, servants. You can leave everything on them, but in USA, you have to cook, clean up, buy groceries, everything on your own. I remember when the first time I went grocery shopping in US, my heart was thumping. But then, I felt so good. It’s a feeling of freedom here.”
She had revealed to Screen what made her and Dr Nene decide to return to India. “My parents were living with me (in the US), they were getting old and they wanted to return to India. That’s why we started thinking about it. We felt the kids will also get to live in India. In the US, you are living in a bubble. They don’t get to know so many things… what poetry is or how successful India has also become; people might not be that rich but are still so happy. Of course, my work was here and my husband wanted to do something for India. It all just fell together,” Madhuri told SCREEN during an earlier interview.
