Recently, at the pre-release event of Retro, Vijay Deverakonda strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir. In doing so, he remarked that the terror attacks were akin to clashes between tribal communities hundreds of years ago. This remark by the Arjun Reddy actor has landed him in trouble now.
A Hyderabad-based lawyer has named Vijay in his police complaint on the grounds that the speech is “demeaning” to Adivasis (tribals).
Now the question is, are there any grounds on which Vijay can defend himself? Comparing modern communal incidents or terror attacks to medieval tribal clashes could be offensive to Adivasis or Scheduled Tribes if the comparison is interpreted as equating their historical or cultural practices with contemporary violence. But Vijay may have made the remark with the intent of mentioning that there exists a historical parallel. In such a case, Vijay can submit that he didn’t make a direct equivalence.
On the work front, Vijay Deverakonda awaits the release of Kingdom on May 30. It is directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri.
