In the Indian Premier League match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Friday, Ravidra Jadeja’s bat failed the initial gauge test as he came out to bat No 4. The umpire checked it a couple of times, with the batter having a wry smile as he pointed to the dressing room for a change in bat. Jadeja also banged the bat on the field a couple of times, and then asked for the gauge to be passed through again but it didn’t go through. Substitute Shreyas Gopal then brought out replacement bats, and the changed bat then passed through the gauge. Jadeja’s first ball promptly hit the outside edge of the bat and went for four.
“The bat you take out on the ground, that’s the only one that needs to be checked. Then if you break it or get a new one, check it again. I like this new rule,” former Australia captain Michael Clarke said on air. Then the first ball that Jadeja faced off Harshal Patel promptly hit the outside edge of the bat and went for four between the short-third fielder and the wicketkeeper. “Ah, the skinny one, gets the edge. The wider one, that’d have hit the middle,” joked Clarke.
According to the rules in place, “the overall length of the bat, when the lower portion of the handle is inserted, shall not be more than 38 in/96.52 cm. The blade of the bat shall not exceed the following dimensions: Width: 4.25in / 10.8 cm, Depth: 2.64in / 6.7 cm, Edges: 1.56in / 4.0cm.”
The Indian Express had earlier reported that this season every IPL batter will have to pass the bat through a gauge before taking guard. While the fourth umpire will check the bats of openers before they enter the field, every subsequent batsman will have to clear the bat gauge wielded by on-field umpires. The triangle-shaped plastic gauge has the dimensions of a legal bat printed on it: depth 2.68 inches, width 4.33 inches, edges 1.61 inches. The curve, or the bulge of the bat, seen on the lower non-hitting side of the bat, needs to be within 0.20 inches. Before this season, bats were not tested on match days; officials would conduct tests on the eve of the game.
