Vardy to leave Leicester with ‘lifetime of memories’ after 13 years

Leicester captain Jamie Vardy will leave the 2016 Premier League champions at the end of the season, the relegated club announced on Thursday.

The 38-year-old forward — a key member of the team that lifted the English league title against all odds in 2016 — was described by the club as “our greatest-ever player”.

The former England international joined the Foxes in 2012 from non-league side Fleetwood Town and has scored 198 goals in 435 appearances. Vardy said he was ‘devastated’ to be leaving, but added that the time was right.

“To the fans of Leicester, I’m gutted that this day is coming, but I knew it was going to come eventually,” he said in a video posted by Leicester on social media.  He said he had made memories ‘that will last a lifetime’ and that the club had become his ‘second home.’

Vardy, however, made it a point to note that he’s not saying goodbye to football just yet. “I want to keep playing and doing what I enjoy doing most, scoring goals. I might be 38, but I’ve still got the desire and ambition to achieve so much more,” he added.
