Three held for transporting beef in Thane

The Thane Police in Maharashtra on Thursday said that it has arrested three people for allegedly transporting beef in Bhiwandi area of the district, the PTI reported.

The police said that a total of 1,800 kg of beef valued at Rs 3.6 lakh has been seized by the police, the official said.

Two vehicles used for the illegal transportation and Rs 1.7 lakh in cash were also seized during the action on Wednesday morning, said an official of Kongaon police station.

Beef was found being transported in a car and tempo at Rajnoli Naka around 6 am, the officials said.

Arshad Hijayatullah Khan (46), Mohammad Nasim Ayub Ansari (37), both drivers, and mutton shop owner Subhan Shafique Qureshi (20) were arrested by the police.

“Preliminary investigation suggests they were allegedly involved in illegal cattle meat trade. Further inquiry is underway to trace the supply network and apprehend the absconding accused,” the official said, the news agency reported.

Meanwhile, in an another incident, earlier this week, three people were held by the police ten days after a robbery at a gunpoint on a high in Thane district of Maharashtra, a police official had said on Tuesday, reported the PTI.

According to the police, the robbery had took place around ten days ago. A trader was robbed of Rs 13 lakh at gunpoint on a highway in Thane district.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-I) S S Burse said the bike-borne robbers intercepted the autorickshaw in which the victim was travelling at a deserted spot between Bhiwandi and Vashi on April 12 night, as per the PTI.

The trio allegedly threatened the trader with a revolver and a knife and snatched the cash before fleeing.

A special team of police scanned footage from over 100 CCTV cameras along the track taken by the autorickshaw. Also, it used intelligence inputs to track down the culprits, leading them to Faizanali Abdul Sattar Ansari (41), a powerloom worker from Bhiwandi, the PTI reported.

Subsequently, Vivek Waghmode (22), a private sector employee, and Mayur Rajendra Patil (22), a plumber, were arrested, police said, adding that two more persons involved in the crime are on the run.

The accused persons were booked on charges of robbery, dacoity, and wrongful restraint under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the news agency reported.

The police recovered stolen Rs 5.25 lakh from the accused and impounded two motorcycles used in the crime.
