Latest Figures Show iPhone 16 Sales Aren’t That Hot

Apple’s iPhone Pro series usually represents the best and latest tech that the company has developed. For instance, Apple initially reserved the 120Hz OLED displays for its Pro and Pro Max models. This is why these models tend to be more expensive, but interestingly enough, many iPhone customers are more than willing to pay for them.

iPhone 16 Pro sales are down

However, that changed with the iPhone 16 Pro series. According to data from the CIRP, sales of Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro series did not perform as well as those of its predecessor. In Q1 2024, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max comprised 45% of Apple’s total iPhone sales.

However, in Q1 2025, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max sales figures declined to about 38%. That’s quite a drop. What’s interesting is also how the base iPhone 16 proved to be more popular. The iPhone 16 accounted for 20% of iPhone sales in Q1 2025, compared to the base iPhone 15, which only accounted for 14% of iPhone sales in Q1 2024.

It is unclear why there is a shift in customer preference. It is possible that the iterative upgrades in the iPhone 16 series weren’t compelling enough. Sure, the A18 Pro chipset is faster compared to its predecessor. Apple also introduced a new Camera Control physical button and thinner bezels.

However, other than that, we’re not sure if there are any real gains one would have when upgrading from an older model, especially when the iPhone 15 series is cheaper now that the iPhone 16 series has been released.

Customers want to pay less

What’s also interesting about these figures is that the iPhone 16e made up 7% of total iPhone sales in Q1 2025. This is despite the fact that the iPhone 16e is quite a compromised phone compared to the base model. However, it could indicate that customers are willing to give up on certain features if it means a lower price tag.

It will be interesting to see what these figures look like with the iPhone 17 series this year. Apple will ditch the Plus model in favor of a new iPhone 17 Air. Based on the leaked dummy units we’ve seen, it actually looks pretty cool.
