Hyundai Motor Group and the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) to collaborate on battery and electrification research at the Hyundai Centre of Excellence for future mobility technology
Hyundai Motor Group on Wednesday inaugurated the Hyundai Centre of Excellence (Hyundai CoE) for future mobility technology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
The new centre aims to accelerate research and development in electrification and battery technologies, forming a key part of Hyundai’s long-term academic-industrial collaboration strategy.
The initiative begins with nine joint research projects, carried out in collaboration with several IITs, focusing on areas such as battery cells, battery management systems (BMS), energy density, safety, durability, and diagnostic technologies. It will also explore new materials and system components to drive innovation in battery design and performance.
“This initiative will help us develop technologies tailored to India while contributing to its economy and society,” said Heuiwon Yang, President and Head of the R&D Division at Hyundai Motor Group. “We’re excited to work with India’s brightest minds in battery innovation.”
The Group is also expanding its Future Technology Research Programme, which allows university faculty to propose research topics for evaluation and support. Originally limited to South Korean institutions and Korean faculty abroad, the programme now includes international researchers, starting with professors at IITs.
Currently, Hyundai is collaborating with around 30 professors from IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras. The Group plans to expand its academic network to 10 universities across India—including non-IIT institutions—by December 2025, with around 100 professors participating.
To further support this ecosystem, Hyundai is launching several initiatives, including technology exchange forums between Indian and Korean experts, global conferences on electric vehicle and battery technologies, and policy dialogue sessions involving government, academia, and industry stakeholders.
As Hyundai’s first academic-industrial collaboration model in a growth economy, the Hyundai CoE is set to become a hub for pioneering mobility solutions, fostering localized innovation to meet the evolving needs of the Indian market.
