Summary: Both Apple and Meta have received massive fines in the EU because of their business practices. Apple received a €500 million, while Apple was slapped with a €200 fine. Apple announced an appeal, while Meta was a lot more straighforward in its statement.
Both Apple and Meta have just received huge fines in Europe, following a short delay. Apple was fined €500 million ($570 million), while Meta has received a €200 million ($228 million) fine by the European Commission.
Apple & Meta gets slapped with major fines in the EU
Antitrust regulators for the European Union handed out these fines in an attempt to curb the power of Big Tech. These fines are a result of a year-long investigation by the European Commission. The investigation was about whether the companies comply with the Digital Markets Act.
Apple believes it is being unfairly targeted, and that the security of its users is at stake
Both Apple and Meta reacted to the fine. Apple said the following: “Today’s announcements are yet another example of the European Commission unfairly targeting Apple in a series of decisions that are bad for the privacy and security of our users, bad for products, and force us to give away our technology for free,” Apple said in an emailed statement.”
Apple was told to remove technical and commercial restrictions that prevent app developers from pointing users to cheaper deals outside Apple’s first-party App Store.
As far as Meta is concerned, it was said that Meta’s binary pay-or-consent model breached the DMA. That model gives Facebook and Instagram users who consent to be tracked a free service. That service is funded by ad revenue.
Meta said that the EC is “attempting to handicap successful American businesses”
Meta did react to the decision. The company said the following: “The European Commission is attempting to handicap successful American businesses while allowing Chinese and European companies to operate under different standards.”
Meta continued its statement with the following: “This isn’t just about a fine; the Commission forcing us to change our business model, effectively imposing a multi-billion-dollar tariff on Meta while requiring us to offer an inferior service.”
Apple has already announced that it will challenge the decision. Meta, on the other hand, is in discussion with the EU, over a new version of its pay-or-consent model.
The companies have been given two months to comply with the regulations.
