Summary: YouTube’s dev team is working on a feature for the website that will automatically enable PiP mode for the currently playing video when you switch to another tab. This behavior is similar to that of the mobile app for Android and iOS. The option is still in development, but could be coming soon to YouTube’s website.
Despite short video-based services gaining a larger share of the global market, YouTube remains the world’s leading video platform. Google’s platform regularly receives new features and changes aimed at improving the user experience. The next tweak in development for YouTube appears to be an “automatic PiP mode” when you switch to another tab.
In 2021, YouTube received one of its biggest improvements: PiP (picture-in-picture) support. Since then, the platform supports playing videos in a mini window while you browse other websites in other tabs or use other programs. You can freely move and resize the pop-up window, allowing you to set it on any area of your screen. Even the mobile app has PiP support, so you can use other apps while watching a video.
YouTube’s website to get an “automatic PiP” option for when switching tabs while watching videos
That said, there’s an issue that has been present for YouTube website users for some time. In the mobile app, YouTube automatically enables a PiP window when you minimize it or switch to another app with a video playing. However, this feature isn’t present on the website. On desktop, you must go to the video tab and manually enable the PiP window.
It seems Google is finally working on resolving the issue. X/Twitter user Leopeva64 spotted a feature in development in Canary (Chrome’s testing branch) that automatically enables a PiP window on YouTube for the currently playing video when you switch tabs.
The post also includes some details about how the feature works. Apparently, once available, you can choose to have YouTube always enable PiP mode for the currently playing video when you exit a tab, or have it only happen once. Of course, you can also keep the current behavior (not automatically enabling a PiP window).
The option under development looks to be quite useful. The availability of multiple options will allow the platform to adapt to the tastes of everyone. There are cases where it’s convenient to have a PiP window enabled automatically, but there are others where you’d prefer the video to play in the background (for example, when listening to relaxing ambient sounds while studying or working).
According to the report, the feature is not yet ready. However, it should arrive on the YouTube website in the coming weeks.
