Shubman Gill falls in the 90s again, ties Virat Kohli’s unwanted feat

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill once again found himself agonizingly close to a century, falling for 90 off 55 balls in their IPL 2025 encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on April 21. In a moment of misfortune, Gill attempted to swat a full toss from Vaibhav Arora but ended up picking out Rinku Singh at deep square leg, cutting short what looked like a potential match-winning innings.

This marked the second occasion in Gill`s IPL career where he was dismissed in the 90s, the first being a 96-run effort against Punjab Kings in 2022. With this latest near-miss, Gill has now joined an elite but unfortunate club, becoming only the fourth Indian batter in IPL history to be dismissed in the 90s two or more times. The others on the list include Ruturaj Gaikwad (3 times), Virat Kohli (2), and KL Rahul (2).

Gill’s innings on Monday was both fluent and authoritative, laced with 10 boundaries and three sixes. His performance also took his season tally past the 300-run mark, pushing him to seventh in the Orange Cap standings with 305 runs from eight innings at a strike rate of 153.26.

At the other end, Sai Sudharsan continued his remarkable run of form, scoring a composed 52 off 36 deliveries. The left-hander matched Gill stroke for stroke in a solid 114-run opening partnership, the duo’s fourth century stand as openers in IPL. With Monday’s effort, Sudharsan climbed to the top of the Orange Cap leaderboard with 417 runs from eight innings, striking at 152.18.

Despite a relatively subdued powerplay, Gujarat Titans accelerated well through the middle overs. The innings received a final flourish from Jos Buttler, who remained unbeaten on 41 off 23 balls. Buttler’s late surge, featuring crisp boundaries and clever placement, ensured GT finished on a commanding 198 for 3.

While Gill narrowly missed out on a personal milestone, his consistency and growing strike rate underline his value as a dependable anchor at the top. Meanwhile, Sudharsan’s rise continues to be one of the most exciting stories of IPL 2025, and Gujarat’s top-order form could prove pivotal in the coming games
