Mani Ratnam’s film Bombay was originally released in 1995. The film, starring Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala, told a love story involving a Hindu man and a Muslim woman. After their elopement, they get married and settle down in Mumbai, which was then called Bombay. Cinematographer Rajiv Menon, speaking to the media the other day, said that theatres would be burned down if a film like Bombay were to be made today.
But the point is, Bombay stoked Muslim fundamentalists so much that Mani Ratnam’s house was almost bombed in Madras. The filmmaker was accused of taking a pro-Hindu position in Bombay. He received threats for certain shots in the super-hit movie. Muslim fundamentalists didn’t like the fact that a Muslim woman was shown to be in love with a Hindu man. They felt that genders and religious identities should have been reversed.
Mani Ratnam was on the hit list of Jihadi outfits for making Roja, Bombay, and Dil Se. For many years, he was provided security cover.
As recently as in 2017, Mani Ratnam’s production house in Chennai received a bomb threat over a dialogue in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam.
