Summary: The Head of Google’s Android XR team has demonstrated Android XR on the company’s prototype smart glasses. These smartglasses will eventually get released by Samsung, it seems. This video demonstration shows what elements look like on the lens of these smart glasses, demos various Gemini actions, and confirms some other details.
Google has decided to offer us a chance to see Android XR in action on the company’s prototype smart glasses. This happened during the TED2025 conference. It follows up Izadi’s initial appearance at TED2025.
As a reminder, Android XR was announced by Google back in December. Google also shared a video back then, in which it showed us some examples of what the software looks like, and what it’ll be able to do.
Google has decided to show us a demo of Android XR on a prototype of its smart glasses
Well, in order to provide more info, Google organized this demo. You can check out the video below, in case you’re interested. In it, you’ll see Google’s Shahram Izadi, who led this demonstration.
Nishtha Bhatia helped him demo the glasses, which were on her face. In this demo, you’ll see a lens that displays Android XR, and what it’ll look like in front of your eyes. It was also revealed that these lenses support a prescription, by the way.
The pair demonstrated what the speaker notes look like on these glasses, and it was also confirmed that the glasses can connect to a smartphone and use “all your phone apps”.
Gemini had a starring role during this demonstration
A lot more happened during this demonstration. For example, Gemini was called upon to generate a haiku. Gemini was also asked to talk about what it sees, in this case, it was asked about something rather specific.
Nishtha has turned around briefly, and then seconds later asked Gemini about what she saw. She asked if Gemini had caught “the title of the white book on the shelf behind me”. Gemini was able to recite it immediately.
The pair demoed some translation capabilities too. Nishtha started talking in Hindi, and Gemini then replied in Hindi, without any settings needing to be changed. Navigation was demonstrated too on these prototype glasses, and more. Do note that these smart glasses will likely be released by Samsung, possibly next year.
