Mumbai News Live Updates: The Maharashtra government’s approval of the three-language policy, making Hindi mandatory for students from Classes 1 to 5, has sparked strong opposition from regional parties. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) Uddhav Thackeray along with the Congress, are criticising the move as an imposition of Hindi. Uddhav said, “The BJP’s strategy is to further divide the people on language. We oppose their politics. BJP leaders at the Centre have always undermined Maharashtra.” A cautious BJP is proceeding delicately on the issue, mindful not to appear anti-Marathi, with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis stating that Marathi has already been made compulsory. Hindi should also be learnt as it is a means of communication in the entire country, CM added.
About the three-language policy: According to a Government Resolution issued on Thursday, Hindi as a third language will be compulsory from Class 1 to 5 from the next academic year. The new syllabus as per NEP will be implemented for Class 1 in 2025-26. For Classes 2, 3, 4 and 6, the policy will be implemented in 2026-27, for Classes 5, 9 and 11 from 2027-28, and for Classes 8, 10 and 12 from 2028-29.
