Trump boasts how he helped Apple with tariff pivots

Summary: In a recent interview, Trump boasted about how he helped Apple with tariff pivots. Trump specifically names Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, suggesting a relationship that’s closer than we thought.

At the moment, it is still unclear what the final picture will look like regarding US companies paying tariffs on goods imported from China. While the current rates are sitting at 145%, Trump made some statements and decisions that have left us more confused than ever.

For instance, after announcing the tariffs, he announced he would exempt smartphones and computers from them. Later, the Trump administration clarified that these tariff exemptions are temporary. Now in his latest interview, Trump boasted on how he had apparently “helped” Apple with these tariff pivots.

Giving Apple a helping hand

During the interview, Trump discussed the automotive industry and how he is looking to help. He was also asked about smartphones, specifically Apple products.

According to Trump, “Look, I’m a very flexible person. I don’t change my mind, but I’m flexible. And you have to be. You just can’t have a wall, and you’ll only go—no, sometimes you have to go around it, under it, or above it. There’ll be maybe things coming up. I speak to Tim Cook. I helped Tim Cook recently. And that whole business—I’m not, I don’t want to hurt anybody, but the end result is we’re going to the position of greatness for our country.”

As 9to5Mac points out, Trump’s specifically naming Coo suggests how his administration favors Apple. It also suggests that Trump speaks to Cook about economic matters. This is a good thing for the company if it hopes to escape the tariffs or pay a lower amount than others.

Apple and Tesla exemptions

It’s not the first time we’ve heard about Apple potentially getting exemptions. In December 2024, before Trump took office, reports claimed that Apple and Tesla might avoid paying these tariffs. This is because Trump is looking to put American businesses first.

Allowing American companies such as Tesla and Apple to avoid these tariffs will give them an advantage over their rivals such as BYD and Samsung.

That said, Trump’s implementation of tariffs isn’t going to be easy. US-based small businesses have already filed lawsuits. Countries like China are increasing their own tariffs on goods imported from the US.
