Political parties tried to outdo one another in staking claim on Dr B R Ambedkar’s political legacy on his 135th birth anniversary on Monday. However, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Surendra Singh Nagar, who is also a secretary of the party, stood out as he used a photo of the Dalit icon as his profile picture on his social media handles. Although BJP leaders have been changing their display or profile photos from time to time mainly on instructions from the social media cell of the party, Nagar this time did it out of his own free will, it is learnt.
Tribute At Home
Following a directive from party chief Mayawati, BSP workers visited the memorials and parks in Lucknow and Noida to offer floral tributes to Dr B R Ambedkar on Monday. However, Mayawati paid tributes to the Dalit icon at her Lucknow residence where his statue is installed, sources in the party said.
Initial Hitch
The new Congress headquarters on Delhi’s Kotla Marg has become partially operational with some senior leaders, department heads and others being assigned offices in the building. However, visitors of the leaders are having a hard time waiting for confirmation from their offices for security clearance at the building gate. On Monday, a group of workers from Nagpur that had come to meet a senior leader waited for an hour until somebody walked up to the gate to get security clearance for them. He apologised to the group and told them that the intercom system was still not operational resulting in the delay, besides citing the busy schedule of the leader.
Work Sunday
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who holds the Agriculture and the Rural Development portfolios, convened a meeting with officials from both ministries at his residence Sunday. This was the weekly review meeting, usually held on Mondays. However, since April 14 was a holiday and Chouhan was scheduled to travel to MP, it was held a day earlier.
