European users’ data is not safe from being scraped by Meta

Summary: Meta just announced that it’s now using data from European users to train its AI models. The company stated that users will be able to opt out of having their data used to train the models. Meta will only train its models on public data.

AI makes the world go round, and data makes AI go round. AI companies need to get their hands on users’ data to train their AI models. The more data used to train the models, the smarter they’ll be. As such, much of the data that you create on the internet can be scraped by one or several companies.

Meta is one of the biggest companies in the world, and one of the biggest data vacuum cleaners. Its Llama models most likely have most of your data in them unless you live in Europe. Well, that used to be the case, anyway.

Meta announced that it will start using European data

The massive social media and metaverse company has been scooping up your data for years. Some of the data it has on its users could be older than many of the kids currently in college. So, we know that it more than enough data to train its models.

However, one can never have enough data, as AI companies have taught us. On Monday, Meta announced that it is “making AI work harder for Europeans“. The company will now start collecting data from European users. This is pretty surprising, as the EU has some strict data collection policies. Several companies have had to change how they conduct business in the EU due to these.

There are limits

Meta announced that users will be able to opt out of having their data collected. This is great, as not everyone is happy with their data being used to train AI models. They’ll receive an “objection form” that will keep Meta from collecting their data.

If you don’t sign the objection form, the company will start collecting your data, but it won’t get its hands on all of your data. It stated that it will only gather publicly available data, like public posts and interactions with Meta AI. It will not use data like private messages or any information from users under 18 years old.

Meta says that this will make Meta AI better for a European audience. “That means everything from dialects and colloquialisms, to hyper-local knowledge and the distinct ways different countries use humor and sarcasm on our products. This is particularly important as AI models become more advanced with multi-modal functionality, which spans text, voice, video, and imagery.
